In the wake of Hakurotwi Mude's recent passing, I'd like to share several photos of his 1999 visit to Kutsinhira, along with other members of the Soul of Mbira Tour. We were very honored to have him here with us, to enjoy his performances, and to learn from him.

Mr. Mude formed a special bond with Charlene Talkington and Dennis Urso (pictured with him below), who have quietly taken an interest in his welfare over the years. He was also very supportive of my son Bud Cohen, both in his mbira playing and personally, for which our family is very grateful.

Mr. Mude was one of the greatest mbira singers that we knew, a person who was profoundly inspired by the spirits in his singing to the extent that he sometimes had to be told later what he had been singing by those who witnessed it. He was deeply moved by well-played mbira music. The group he originated, Mhuri yekwaRwizi, was one of the best known mbira groups of all time, and included at differemt times such great players as Cosmas and Justin Magaya, Erick and Mondrek Muchena, Ephat Mujuru, Luken Pasipamire, and hosho players Ephraim Mutemasango, Thomas Kwaramba, and Webster Pasipamire.

I would also like to share that Mr. Mude's funeral expenses, and the support and school fees of his remaining school age children will will fall upon his cousin, Cosmas Magaya. If you feel moved to make a monetary donation in honor of Mr. Mude, please contact me at mkolo@continet.com or 541-484-5034, and I will see that your gift is safely delivered to Zimbabwe for the purpose of funeral expenses and school fees for Mr. Mude's younger children.

Tatenda chaizvo,

Marilyn
