Kite Giedraitis has been playing african marimba since 1987 and teaching since 1989. All these bands (and several others) arose from his marimba classes, most are still studying from him. He made this CD to record his arrangements of traditional and popular songs. Look for an upcoming CD by his marimba/mbira group Fools In Paradise.

Nabi Camara is a griot from Guinea who has played the balafon and djembe since age three. He has performed with Les Merveilles de Guinee, Bala et ses Baladins, Les Ballets Africains de Guinee, Mande Yagha and Fatala. Since then, Nabi has travelled the world performing the sweet melodies of the Mandingo people and sharing his rich culture. He is currently based in Seattle.

Recorded live on November 6 of last year, this CD is the third in a series that began with the first Inland Sea fest in 1997. The recording is dedicated to Baba Chi, Dumisani Maraire, inspirer and teacher to many of the festival participants. Dumi passed away just a short two weeks after the festival. He is remembered here with performances by Njuzu Marimba of four of his arrangements. Njuzu also is heard in their collaboration with Bellingham’s 60-voice Kulshan Chorus in Siyakudumisa and Maculele (a Brazilian piece). An excerpt of Erica Azim’s mbira performance of Nyamaropa hints at what can be heard more fully on her recent CD Mbira: Healing Music of Zimbabwe. Erica also joins in singing with Linc Nqobizazi Mkwananzi behind a performance of Torai Mapadzi, with Limpopo Marimba on the keys. Erica also contributes a vocal on Taisirewa, performed by Marimba Muzuva and friends. One Muzuvan, Ted Wright, is also heard on chipendani playing Ndabaiwa Danererwa Chamu Changu. A portion of royalties from the sale of this CD will go to the Dumi’s family. May the tradition continue!
