At last, Elektra/Nonesuch has re-released on CD and tape this 1973 audio companion to Paul Berliner’s book, The Soul of Mbira. Not merely a good listen, this album is important historically, including performances by mbira masters who have passed on such as John Kunaka and Mujuru Muchatera. The nine cuts provide examples of several types of mbira: 22-, 23-, 24-, and 25-key mbira dzavadzimu, 26-key matepe, 35-key njari, and 17-key ndimba. Recorded in Zimbabwe by Paul Berliner.
